Another Friday night and another late night dinner. As per ritual we watched a movie, and head out for another night of gluttony and feasting.
We took a slightly different approach this week, on my insistence we went to a restaurant we can't even recall how many times we've been too over the years. Supermeal is open 24/7 on weekends, and tastes great at any hour in any situation. It is located in the heart of the city, it is easily accessible and being in Chinatown, well priced.
Supermeal is renowned for its XO sauce. A blend of roughly chopped dried seafoods, including scallops, dried fish and shrimp, and subsequently cooked with chilli peppers, onions, and garlic. The sauce originates from the 1980's from the territory of Hong Kong. The 'Spring Moon' restaurant is widely credited with its creation but many restaurants lay claim to the prize.
We parked and walked in at about 12am, found seats and settled in with menu's.
Service isn't usually something you expect at this rock bottom price, but we were fortunate to have a older waiter who seemed to genuinely care, serve our table that night and made a wonderful suggestion to slightly alter our usuals.
Fried handmade noodles Shanghainese style in XO chilli $12.80 |
We didn't have to wait long, our chilli fried prawns came out within five minutes. It was magnificent, we'd never tried this before but we wished we had, we were salivating with each bite.
We went through a quarter of the prawns when the noodles had arrived, the combination of the two were a match made in heaven. The spicy prawns that melted at the bite and the noodles, cooked in fatty oils and Cantonese flavours.
Mango Pudding $5.50 |
Over many years our bodies have been designed to eat at certain times, circadian rhythms dictate when you can eat and over eat, twelve am isn't that time. We were at the point that vomiting would be comforting and quite relieving, but we continued to eat as the flavours were just amazing.
We had to order our customary dessert, it was tradition, and we needed the oily taste from our mouths gone, and there's nothing that does the trick like mango pudding.
Its amazing what good service does, it made an ordinary night into something extraordinary.
We were so thankful we had that waiter that night, our usual had been changed permanently for the better and we will be forever grateful for the experience.
Happy Eating
